Doors 18:30 | Concerts 19:30 & 21:30
The musical icon returns to J.A.W for two intimate concerts at Berlin's beloved Musikbrauerei on November 6 & 7 accompanied by aja monet, Samora Pinderhughes and Jake & Abe for the occasion.
This year James Baldwin would’ve turned 100 years, a whole century later, he’s still a continous source of inspiration for many. In tribute to Baldwins work Ndegeocello unveils her latest musical collaboration No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin. Connected through their shared admiration for the author’s words and revolutionary spirit, surrealist blues poet aja monet joins the legendary musician & producer Meshell Ndegeocello to grace the stage for a special live performance. Both messengers in their own respective, we are thrilled to present this double bill at J.A.W and to spice up that line up, we are also excited to announce that Jake & Abe will open for Meshell on both nights.
Meshell Ndegeocello is a one of a kind bassist, singer-songwriter and producer, who has witnessed the highs and lows of a musical career spanning over 30 years. Meshell’s music summons a transformative and collaborative spirit that ignites a genre-bending and groundlaying sound, at once a musical experience, a church service, a celebration, a testimonial, and a call to action. Seeing herself as a witness of time, Ndegeocello has brought forth a body of work honoring Baldwin's legacy. No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, Co-produced by Meshell and guitarist Chris Bruce, featuring frequent collaborators, as well as powerful spoken word performances, is her most recent release, an incredibly intimate and well produced record, transmitting powerful messages.
aja monet is a surrealist blues poet and community organizer, who moves between mediums of writing, organizing, music and art. The core of her work revolves around liberation. At any given time you’ll find the revolutionary spirit of those that came before her, Audre Lorde, Amiri Baraka and the Last Poets, to name a few, in her poetry. Her words are gentle, yet precise, loaded with meaning and truth, centering Black resistance, love and the inexhaustible quest for joy. Her debut album, when the poems do what they do, has received critical acclaim and appreciation from peers and fans and positioned her as an outstanding musical poet of love, as the New York Times puts it.
Jake Sherman & Abe Rounds are both part of Meshell´s band, taking the lead on drums & organ. When they are not touring on their own or with the likes of Joni Mitchell, Blake Mills, Bilal or Pino Palladino, they work on their duo project ‚Jake and Abe‘ to release their debut album this fall.
The Musikbrauerei is a 120 year old Schneider Brewery and one of the last authentic locations in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg, with its two main rooms, the Säulenhalle & the Recording Hall.
The capacity for both concerts with Meshell in the Recording Hall will be limited to 250 guests per night.
