In December of 2020, Cape Town, South Africa-based drummer 𝗔𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱𝘇𝗲 traveled to Cairo, Egypt, where he would assemble a quintet with some of the city's finest improvisers: Maurice Louca on synthesizers, Adham Zidan on bass, Chérif El-Masri on guitar, and Alan Bishop on alto saxophone.
On November 4th, this group will reunite in Berlin, for a first-ever live performance in Europe, proudly presented by Morphine Raum and JAW Family.
Set up on a rooftop in a historic part of the city, the group played free through some of Gamedze's recently composed tunes, all of which would end up on his 2023 Album Turbulence and Pulse, released by the good folks of International Anthem and under the guiding principles of his improvisational, philosophical, revolutionary ethos.
Shouts to our dear friend Rabih Beaini for making it happen with us & Family member Asher Gamedze.
Asher Gamedze is a South African drummer, composer, scholar and bandleader based in Cape Town. His music is a profound mixture of various musical traditions from Southern Africa, free improvisation and jazz and radical social and political thought. A self-taught musician, Gamedze gained recognition over the years for his work on the drums with the likes of Angel Bat Dawid, Nduduzo Makhatini, and as a session player for many other South African artists, before releasing his critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Dialectic Soul’ in 2020.
Named one of the best jazz albums of the year by various publications including The New York Times, it was followed in 2022 by the duo release ‘Out Side Work’ and the quartet album ‘Turbulence and Pulse’, released in 2023 through a special collaboration between International Anthem and Mushroom Hour Half Hour. This year saw the release of his latest album on International Anthem - the large ensemble piece ‘Constitution’, that saw him assemble The Black Lungs - a 10-piece band of South African musicians for the occasion.
Asher’s work with the musicians of Another Time Ensemble follows this tradition of collaboration and improvisation.
